Sports Nutrition:
Sports nutrition has come on in leaps and bounds since the days of athletes believing eating powdered animal organs and whisky would help them perform better. The good news is that developments in sports nutrition aren't reserved for the select few. Thousands of regular gym users are taking advantage of advances in sports nutrition to build more muscle, burn fat, rehydrate faster, feel stronger and improve their performance in the gym or sporting arena. During intense athletic competition it is essential that fluid lost in sweat is topped up effectively and quickly to avoid dehydration and loss of performance. It has been established by the world's leading sports nutritionists that 2% dehydration equates to a 20% loss in performance. Ice Hockey players may lose up to 2kg in sweat during a match which needs to be replenished into the bloodstream fast by drinking an equivalent of 2 litres of isotonic or preferably hypotonic fluid for one to two hours prior to the competition and throughout a 60 minute hockey match. Unless these lost fluids are replaced in small doses during competition the result will be a dramatic drop in concentration and athletic performance. Water alone cannot be absorbed quickly enough. Similar to other intense and energy-sapping sports such as Rugby League, cycling and F1 racing, electrolyte replacement solutions maintains the athletes' optimum performance. At Pirates pre-season training sessions each player will be weighed regularly - before, during and after each intense session to establish their individual weight loss and fluid requirement to enable each player's optimum performance.
