Thank You To Bobby, The Players And The Fans
With the season now at a close Pirates' MD looks back on his first season and forward to the new season
Speaking to Pirates Ice Hockey Allan said, 'When I was approached to take over the club at the beginning of the season I was honoured as I still had such a strong feeling for Pirates after my spell with them ten years ago. I had some difficult decisions to make from day one, non more so than decision of Head Coach. I hadn't met Bobby Haig before but was aware of the good reputation he had and when I was told he was interested in coming to Braehead it was an easy decision to make.'
'When we met we hit it off immediately and from that day I have been proud to be associated with him. I said to him then that he was the coach and whatever he wanted to do on the playing side he could do it and I would support him. I wouldn't interfere in any decision he made. We both agreed that we weren't going to win the league this season but all we wanted was to make progress. There is no doubt that Bobby has made huge strides with the players.'
'I remember the first time I met the players was when I went into the dressing room to give them the reasons why I brought in a new coach. I didn't know any of them (with the exception of Chris Conaboy who I worked with at Dundee Stars) and I explained my reasoning behind the decision I made. From that day they gave me their backing and they have given 100% for the club in every game we have played. The camaraderie in the locker romm is tremendous - they are like a family. Even when guys are out injured they attend matches and give support to the club.'
The fans. What can I say? I have had so many messages of support, our crowd numbers are on the increase and the noise levels in the arena are also increasing every week. Thank you all for the backing you have given the players. I remember ten years ago in the BNL when down in Hull and losing 5-0 a large contingent of Pirates' fans singing, 'We only score in the warm-up'. That showed to me then what a great set of supporters we have and that is still the case today.'
'I would also like to thank my other 'team'. The volunteers who give up their time to the club to ensure that match night goes off without a hitch. I hope you don't mind if I single out Bernie Bruce who has been an inspiration to me. Whenever I feel down he picks me up and the amount of work he and his good wife Grace does for me is immense. And one other mention to John Murray who has the biggest smile in Scotland. Thanks John and keep up your 'networking' (private joke)'
'Let's all look forward to next season and hopefully success. I don't have all the answers and I may fail. If I do I will done so having given it my best shot. Have a great summer and I look forward to seeing you all next season.'
'Thank you'
